Through community action, the university was formed in 1914 as the State School for Mines and Metallurgy before joining the University of Texas System in 1919 as the Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy. Mining Engineering continued to be offered until 1966. The restart of the program comes with UT Regents support as Texas has developed the largest non-fuel mineral production economy in the US (USGS: Mineral Commodity Summary 2024). The program will be the only Mining Engineering program in Texas and will be relaunched with strong support from industrial partners who wish to build a world-class and modern Mining Engineering program.The department welcomes applications from candidates in all areas of mining and associated fields.
